Dashboard Indicator Lights: What Do They Mean? | Toronto, ON

Dashboard Indicator Lights: What Do They Mean? | Toronto, ON
One of the easiest ways to tell if your vehicle is experiencing issues is to check your dashboard indicator lights. To help you understand what your vehicle is trying to tell you, here’s a look at some of the more common lights you’ll find on the dashboard.

Check Engine Light

The check engine light is perhaps the most well-known dashboard indicator. This light comes on whenever there are issues in the emission control system. This can range from something minor like a loose gas cap to something big like an engine leak. When you see this light, you should bring your vehicle in to a mechanic as soon as possible.

When your car is having issues with its generator or electrical charging system, including your battery, this light will come on. Seeing this light is a sure sign that you need to bring your vehicle in for a checkup.

Seat Belt Warning Light

If you don’t buckle your seat belt when you’re driving, or if any of your passengers don’t, this light will come on. It will also flash when you first turn on your vehicle to remind you.

Engine Oil Pressure Warning Light

If your engine oil pressure is getting low, this light will illuminate on your dashboard. If you see it, pull over right away, check your oil levels, and add oil if necessary. If this light continues to stay on after you add oil, your car might be facing bigger problems — so have it checked out as soon as possible.

Did you forget to fill up your tank again? If so, you might see this indicator lighting up your dashboard. This warning light lets you know when your gas tank is close to empty, encouraging you to get to your nearest gas station to fill up.
